Our back story and future plans.
I founded Clay & Associates Advocates in June 2019. There was no grand launch, no anchor client, no five-year plan. I had a practising certificate, a conviction that I could serve clients well, and the willingness to do the work.
The early years were defined by range. I took the matters that came through the door, from litigation and criminal defence to commercial disputes and conveyancing, and I learned something from each one. That breadth turned out to be a strength. It gave me a working understanding of how legal problems actually show up in people's lives and businesses, rarely fitting neatly into a single practice area.
Over time, the practice grew. Boniface Gitau joined as our clerk and paralegal in 2024, and in 2026 Sarah Susan came on as an associate advocate, followed by Mercy Jerono in client services. Each of them brought something the firm needed, and the team we have today is one I trust completely.
In late 2025, I made a deliberate decision to organise the firm around the industries we serve, not just the legal services we offer. We began building focused expertise in technology and startups, financial services, life sciences, communications and media, sports, and manufacturing. The goal is not to be the biggest firm in any of these sectors. It is to be the most useful.
We are also investing in work that goes beyond client matters. We are developing Kenya's first comprehensive annual sports law research report, targeted for late 2026, and building a body of thought leadership across our focus industries. I want this firm to contribute to the development of legal practice in Kenya, not just participate in it.
That is where we are. A small firm with serious ambitions, built on the belief that good legal work starts with understanding what the client is actually trying to achieve.
